Trimellitates

Trimellitate esters are aromatic triesters and are manufactured by the esterification of a range of alcohols with trimellitic anhydride (TMA), which is similar in structure to diesters such as phthalates however trimellitates have a third functionality on the aromatic ring. By taking on three alcohols trimellitates are more viscous than linear adipates and sebacates, with a typical viscosity range of 53 - 300 cSt at 40°C.

Trimellitates have the following performance characteristics;

  • Low volatility
  • Good heat stability
  • Good oxidation stability
  • Excellent low temperature properties
  • High film strength and good hydrolytic stability
  • Low biodegradability

Their higher viscosity makes them suitable for use in high temperature oven chain lubricants, gear oils, compressors, two stroke oils and greases.
